“Universal people, looking for the perfect beat. Mighty Zulu Nation, they have found the perfect beat. Afrika Bambaataa, I present the perfect beat…” Afrika Bambaataa, “Looking for the Perfect Beat”, 1983
TRUTH. Good morning Daily Dosers! Afrika Bambaataa’s “Looking for the Perfect Beat” is one of my favorite rap songs because (a) it is classic and gave birth to hip-hop’s global movement, (b) I can skate my ashwaters off to it, and (c) it is a global message of PEACE wrapped up in a dope beat. So this morning I hope this Monday message of TRUTH reaches you in peace. Peace. Now that’s something that the world needs now more than ever. Peace. That’s something that we should all strive for more than any amount of money, fame, or success. Peace. As I mature, and gain more wisdom I realize why God talks so much about peace in His Word. Peace is the ultimate cure for stress and violence and disruption in our lives and around the world. It is literally “the perfect beat.” Why?
Well, the Democrats and Republicans are deadlocked, and preparing for the country’s default of its loans and debts. Wow. And think about this weekend’s tragedy in Oslo, Norway. In a place where the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded – one of the world’s most beautiful and peaceful places – a man by the name of (I’m not even gonna write his name) decided because of his personal unrest that he would bomb a government building then take it upon himself to literally spray bullets through a camp hosting a retreat for some of the world’s next generation of leaders. His reasons? To stop the spread of Islam and defeat liberal immigration policies. Are you kidding me? Clearly he needs to “look for the perfect beat” because he is missing it fa shizzle!! This dude said that his actions were “atrocious, but necessary.” Heartbreaking for the victims and their families. Heartbreaking for the killer who thinks that slaying 94 people is the way to achieve revolutionary change. May the Norwegian victims rest in peace. May their families find peace – the perfect beat – in what I can only imagine is emotional chaos right now. Then there’s the loss of Amy Winehouse. May she rest in peace as her family copes with her loss. This too was another weekend heartbreak. So talented. So young. And at 27, the strong-voiced British diva joins Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix, and Janis Joplin, who were all 27 when their lives were cut short.
The DDR: It is not my intent to begin in a solemn place this morning. To the contrary, I wish you a day that starts and ends on a high note because this thing called life isn’t a dress rehearsal. So live each day to the fullest; as if it were your last. Tell your loved ones that you love them, raise the stakes, and strive to be the best that you can be one day at a time. Look for “the perfect beat.” Search for “the perfect beat”. There is always room in your heart to LOVE more; room in your mind to think BIGGER; and space in your soul to FIND peace. Life is only lived once. Dream BIG!! Make it count…peacefully.
