OCCUPY ALL STREETS

“I got my liberty choppin grams up. Street justice. I pray God understand us. I pledge allegiance to all the scramblers. This is the Star Spangled Banner.” Jay-Z & Kanye West, “Made in America,” Watch the Throne, 2011.
JUSTICE. Good Morning Daily Dosers. Zaneta here again. Although I reside in Chicago, I was made in Los Angeles. Recently in L.A. the Occupy movement included thousands of people protesting on behalf of the 99%. While I am for people standing up for a cause, I think it is time for us to decrease the protests and increase the action. L.A. protesters camped out in tents near City Hall just blocks away from Skid Row, one of the largest areas in the U.S. with a stable homeless population. There is only so much our protests can do to change Wall Street’s flagrant behavior. However, if thousands of people are going to gather, camp out in tents, and protests for days at a time, surely we can get together to improve the state of places like Skid Row. In 2009, the City of Los Angeles reported that close to 4,000 people lived on Skid Row. Just the name alone is depressing. But anyway… Instead of spending all day protesting, volunteer at a nearby shelter or help gather resources for the community organizations servicing the large number of homeless people or come up with a strategy that can put this Occupy movement on a more sustainable track. It is time for us to start consistently helping each other because Wall Street does not have us (the 99%) in mind. “Occupy All Streets” is a Rocawear shirt Jay-Z flaunted weeks ago after a Watch the Throne concert. Although he is not directly affiliated with the Occupy movement, the shirt’s message reminds us that there are community needs that extend beyond Wall Street into All Streets.

The DDR: Dr. King once said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” We are being threatened, whether you feel it or not. How can you aid a community need today? This week? This holiday season? We have to start being of service to each other. It’s the only way change can happen. Peace and Blessings everyone.
