“I need a slow motion video right now. Cause I’m moving in slow motion, slow motion. Feelin’ like a Hype Williams shootin’ a… gootin a…, hey hey hey. I need a slow motion video right now ay ay”. Jay-Z and Kanye West, “Illest MF Alive”, Watch The Throne, 2011.
Good morning Daily Dosers. This is Joshua and today, I am fresh off my first year of law school finals. Contracts. First of all I want to say Happy Belated Birthday to Jay-Z whose birthday was this weekend. And second I want to give a shout out to my fellow Daily Doser colleague and Spelman sister Zaneta Smith for being selected as a White House intern this summer. And third, big ups to Dr. Joyce for getting an extension on her residency at Harvard. Major. That’s how we do it over her at the DDR.
These finals got me really feeling like I’m moving in slow motion right now. In a week, I’ll be watching the throne at the Staples Center with Jay-Z and Kanye West. Then I’ll be home to NC for the holidays. (Shout out to J. Cole.) Thank God for every moment that he gives me. Law school exams and all. Today I’m taking a break and getting back to work tomorrow morning. I call this moment, “Enjoying life.”
Sometimes we get so caught up in moments of studying, hustling, and working that we forget to enjoy life. To stop and smell the roses. A colleague and I talked about this very idea recently. As someone in his early twenties living in a new city like Los Angeles, I definitely try to make sure that I take some time out from studying to venture out into the city, or to enjoy a concert, or just sit back and enjoy a plate of good food. What’s the point of working hard, if you can’t enjoy its benefits.
The DDR: Work hard, play harder, that’s my whole life motto. You only get to live this day once. Reward yourself for your hard work. Don’t forget to pat yourself on the back from time to time. Make sure you take the time to notice all of your hard work. The hustle is real, but life is realer. You only get it once, and it’s not a dress rehearsal. When was the last time you sat back and said “Man, I did that.” Word.
